Haitian Children’s Homes Are In Rubble

Phil Murphy, co-founder of House of Blessings and the COP Sponsorship Program in Callebasse, Haiti, reports on his recent visit to the community and with our children:

“On January 16, a team of four headed to Haiti to assess the needs and determine the approach to be taken over the next few weeks and months. A portion of that assessment was to locate and visit with Isaac Adrien who is the coordinator for the Children of Promise program in Haiti.

We found the House of Blessings in good shape with no structural damage. The kids were still sleeping outside because they were afraid; but, other than that, there were no injuries among our sponsored children. We were able to visit the homes of 16 of the 20 children sponsored in Callebasse.   Some are in rubble, others have portions standing, but are not inhabitable; five homes are okay; and a few we were not able to get information about.

This is the home of Smath AUGUSTIN (HAC-014).
Parts are standing, but the home is uninhabitable.

what used to be his home in Callebasse.

Bellynne and Nacofa (HAC-016 and HAC-015) stand in front
of what is left of their home.

Before we even made it to the mountain village of Callebasse where the House of Blessings is located, the director of the home had told us the story of how Isaac had hurried towards the orphanage from church once the earth had stopped shaking.  As he neared the lower gate of the property he found a young girl pinned under the wall that had fallen.  He found super strength and was able to lift the wall section enough to allow her to scoot free!

In this photo at left, Isaac Adrien, director of COP Program in Haiti, is prayed over at the Directors’ Conference this past June. God is sustaining him and using him in the aftermath of the earthquake on January 12. Please continue to pray for Isaac.

I would like to say that we all can be very proud of Isaac. He has done a great job in the midst of this traumatic event. He and his brother, Steve, begin translating today with the relief efforts being coordinated by Quisqueya Christian School. They felt God wanted them to sign up and volunteer.”

Note: Isaac was sponsored through Children of Promise for many years, was raised at the House of Blessings Orphanage, and is now the director of the Children of Promise program in Haiti. He is a living example of what sponsorship does in the lives of children.

Call for Donations
Children of Promise is calling for donations to be used for the immediate needs of food, clothing, medicines, and blankets, and the long-term needs of rebuilding homes and providing ongoing assistance for food and household items destroyed.

The first round of funds will be sent at the end of January.  In order for funds to be sent on January 31, donations should arrive in the Children of Promise office by Friday, January 29, 2010.  All funds received by that date will be delivered to Haiti at the end of the month.  Funds received after that date will be delivered on a date yet to be determined.

In the event that an excess of funds is received over the amount needed to provide the required assistance to Children of Promise children and families, the excess funds will be held in the Children of Promise Emergency Fund for future disaster relief and emergency situations involving COP children and their families.
