Colombia

Map of ColumbiaColombia is a beautiful country of many contrasts. One of its main features is the rugged Andes mountain chain. The Andes are situated in the central and western parts of the country and extend north-south across almost the entire length of Colombia.

This country has suffered a great deal politically. During the 1960s, harsh social conditions in Colombia were a breeding ground for guerrilla groups that have been dominating the political scene ever since.

Children who are part of Children of Promise sites in Colombia have suffered the effects of guerrilla warfare. Children who live in Bogota find themselves dealing with the fear of danger every day as the capital is known as the most violent on earth. Children in the southern city of Puerto Asis live in the middle of the cocaine growing region. Many of these children have lost parents to violence. It is not unusual to find that one or both of their parents have been assasinated.

Without the help of loving sponsors, these children would struggle greatly just to survive. Yet with sponsorship, they are able to eat, clothe themselves, and attend school.  They also are learning about Jesus. What a blessing it is to know that amidst uncertainty and hardship, there is a God who is always there loving them and watching over them.
