Indochina

Map of IndochinaChildren of Promise serves five countries in Asia. Because of sensitive political situations and for the protection of the children and leaders, we choose to be somewhat vague as to the locations of several projects in one of these countries.

The staff regularly visits the Children of Promise sites in this country. The tremendous needs of the children and their families are readily apparent.  It is wonderful to see the difference that Children of Promise is making in their lives.

One sponsored girl recently interviewed is named Ma Pyeih. She stood before us, her short black hair bobbed just below her ears. The aged look in her eyes defied her twelve years.

Her mother stood beside her, looking much, much too young to be a mother. Yet there she was, already a widow, with five children to support.

Ma Pyeih's father has died of tuberculosis. Ma Pyeih also has tuberculosis. Yet while her mother tries to sell vegetables to earn money, she watches her young brothers and sisters, cleans, cooks, and washes the clothes.

Ma Pyeih receives medicine, food, and school supplies from her sponsor. As we spoke with her through an interpreter, we were struck with the stoic way she shouldered the burden of her family right along with her mother. We were also struck by the hope she has for the future because she is a sponsored child. We share that hope with her. All of us look forward to the day when she is free of tuberculosis and can pursue the dreams and aspirations for her future that God has placed in her heart.

These girls really enjoyed being interviewed.

The young fellows are waiting for their turn to be interviewed.

It is culturally appropriate to cross your arms over your chest when speaking with your elders.

This little girl was a bit shy.

Sponsored children with their mothers.

One sponsored girl happily shares her dreams for the future.
