Lebanon

Map of LebanonLebanon is located in the Middle East, bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It lies between Israel and Syria. The climate is mild to cool, with hot, dry summers and wet winters. During the winter, the mountains of Lebanon are covered with heavy snows.

Lebanon has a population of nearly 4 million. Ninety-five percent of the population is Arab, four percent is Armenian, and the remaining percentage is made up of a mixture of ethnic groups. The official language of Lebanon is Arabic, although French, English, and Armenian are also widely spoken. Seventy percent of Lebanon is Muslim, and thirty percent is Christian.

Lebanon struggled hard to overcome the results of the catastrophic civil war of the 1970s and 1980s. Syrian troops and a small UN force assisted in maintaining peace. Much rebuilding of the capital took place in the 1990s and early in the 21st century. However, the devastating war with Israel in 2006 destroyed much of the infrastructure of the country. Lebanon is faced with rebuilding again.
