The statistics are sobering. Approximately 91 out of every 1,000 children born in developing nations will die before they reach five years of age. What is even more sobering is that nearly 8 million of these yearly deaths are preventable.  Malnutrition, diarrhea, malaria, and pneumonia are some of the treatable causes of death. Yet many children, living in poverty with insufficient health care and poor sanitation, have little chance of living a healthy, full life.

Most of us never had a thought about surviving childhood. We thought about playing and learning and friends and parties and growing up. Most of us didn't worry about our next meal or whether we'd have a warm place to sleep that night.

Yet all over this world, millions of children are close companions with hunger and fear and hopelessness. They lie down at night wondering where their parents are, where they can scrape together the next meal, or how they will be able to care for their even smaller brothers and sisters.

However, even amidst this grim picture, there is hope. There is a God who sees every one of his children.  There is a God who commanded us in Psalm 82:3 to "defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed."
