1964–2005

Carol Ann Smatlak was a devoted teacher and friend. She will be greatly missed by her family, the school community where she taught, and her church home. Carol graduated from High School in the Punxsutawney area in Pennsylvania. She then attended Anderson University for her undergraduate studies, and Indiana University of Pennsylvania for her master’s degree.

Carol was involved in music and multimedia activities in her church. She added a smile everywhere she was went. After Carol lost her battle with cancer, her school district honored her with a walk called “Miles of Smiles for Miss Smatlak.” A poem was written in her honor, celebrating her life:

Carol Smatlak

Once a gentle, patient person
Shined some sunshine on our days,
and she always seemed to be there
With her thoughtful, helpful ways.

What we needed, she would find us,
In her calm and quiet way.
She’d inspire contemplation
with her small “quote of the day.”

She seemed always energetic,
Conscientious, fair, serene
As she lived her faith among us
Helping God’s love to be seen.

Carol always seemed to be there
With that smile we counted on,
And our days have lost some sunshine
Now that Carol Smatlak’s gone.

In our minds we see her hurry
To the next task she must start.
Carol’s gone from this world’s turmoil,
but she still lives in our hearts.
