Ugandan COP Children Experiencing Famine

“Children of Promise announces a call for Famine Relief funds to assist sponsored children in Uganda,” Dr. Paul Maxfield shares. Upon receiving Rev. Colleen Stevenson’s (director of Upendo/COP) request for assistance, Dr. Maxfield wired $2,000 last week for immediate assistance.  Nearly 40% of COP sponsored children in Uganda need food supplements at this time.

“For the last three seasons there has been little or no rain, especially in the northern and northeastern regions; however, the whole country has been affected. Families have not been able to enjoy a good harvest; therefore, affecting their ability to have food and to sell food to pay for needs or even for drying and storing. Costs have soared, making it difficult to purchase enough food to eat,” reports Rev. Stevenson.

Children of Promise sponsors 888 children in 20 sites in Uganda. Seven of the 20 sites are experiencing famine due to lack of rain and crop failure. Nearly 400 children live in the affected villages. The villages include: West Nile (UGW), Gulu (UGG), Lira (UGL), Kirongero (UGK), Palissa (UGP), Kapchorwa (UGKP), and Jinja (UGJ). Children who attend high school away from their home villages have been affected as well.

“This relief will enable families to have some dried food preserves to stretch out their stock. It will also help the Children of Promise clusters in a small way at school where our sponsor kids study and have a meal,” shares Rev. Stevenson. Children of Promise is expecting continued need while new crops are planted and matured before families are able to provide for their own needs.
